Editorial Policy

Who we are

Play Learning Guide is written and maintained by a small editorial team. We are content editors, not pediatricians, therapists, or manufacturers. Our job is to read the research carefully, translate it into plain English, and tell you where we are uncertain.

When a question needs clinical judgement — whether a behaviour is typical, whether a delay needs assessment, whether a product is safe for a given age — we point you to the organisations that provide it: the American Academy of Pediatrics, the CDC, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. We do not replace them, and we do not diagnose.

How an article is produced

Every page on this site goes through the same four steps before it goes live.

  1. Planning. We start from a question parents actually ask, taken from search queries, forum threads, and product reviews — not from a list of keywords we would like to rank for.
  2. Drafting. The draft has to answer that question in the first two paragraphs. If the answer needs a number, a range, or an age, we give one. We cut sentences that could apply to any product or any child.
  3. Source checking. Any claim that could affect a buying decision or a safety decision is checked against a primary source and linked. Where the evidence is thin or contested, we say so in the sentence itself rather than adding a disclaimer at the bottom.
  4. Second pass. Before publication we re-read for structure, internal links, age ranges, and whether the conclusion is actually supported by what came before it. Articles that fail this pass are rewritten, not published.

Products, prices, and recommendations

We do not manufacture or sell anything. Product pages on this site are buying guides, and our income comes from affiliate commissions when a reader chooses to buy through a link.

Three rules follow from that:

  • Commission never decides placement. A product is included because it fits the age range and the use case, not because it pays more.
  • Prices are approximate and dated. Retail prices change weekly. Any figure we print is the price we saw on the date shown at the top of the page, and the live price is always the one at the retailer checkout.
  • We print the drawbacks. Every product entry names at least one real limitation — assembly time, footprint, noise, a short useful life, an age ceiling. A guide without drawbacks is a sales page.

Where we have not personally handled a product, we say what our assessment is based on: manufacturer specifications, published safety testing, and patterns in verified purchase reviews. We do not claim hands-on testing we did not do.

How often pages are updated

Every article shows both its publication date and the date it was last updated. Buying guides are re-checked when a product is discontinued, recalled, or repriced, and at least once a year. Guidance pages are re-checked when the underlying recommendation changes — for example, when a health authority revises its screen-time advice.

If a page has not been updated in a long time, treat the specifics in it as a snapshot of that date, especially prices and product availability.

Scope and audience

Play Learning Guide publishes general educational content about learning through play, educational toys, early skills, creativity, and screen-free family activities. The intended audience is parents, caregivers, educators, and gift buyers.

Editorial standards

Articles should use clear headings, distinguish facts from judgment, explain meaningful tradeoffs, and avoid guarantees. When an article makes a factual claim that may affect a buying or safety decision, we aim to consult and link to an appropriate primary or authoritative source.

Product and safety information

Age labels, specifications, prices, availability, and safety notices can change. Readers should verify current information with manufacturers and official recall or consumer-safety authorities before acting.

Corrections and updates

Material errors should be corrected when identified. To request a review, email contact@playlearningguide.com with the article URL and supporting information.

Independence

Commercial relationships must not determine our conclusions. Sponsored placements, supplied products, or affiliate relationships should be disclosed when they apply.
